Notwithstanding set in different worlds populated by means of alien beings, technology fiction is a website the place people can critique and re-imagine the paradigms that form this global, from basics corresponding to the intercourse and gender of the physique to international strength kinfolk between sexes, races, and international locations. Feminist thinkers and writers are more and more spotting technology fiction's power to shatter patriarchal and heterosexual norms, whereas the creators of technology fiction are bringing new intensity and complexity to the style via enticing with feminist theories and politics. This e-book maps the intersection of feminism and technology fiction via shut readings of technology fiction literature by means of Octavia E. Butler, Richard Calder, and Melissa Scott and the flicks "The Matrix" and the "Alien" sequence. Patricia Melzer analyzes how those authors and flicks symbolize debates and ideas in 3 parts of feminist notion: id and distinction, feminist opinions of technological know-how and know-how, and the connection between gender identification, physique, and wish, together with the hot gender politics of queer wishes, transgender, and intersexed our bodies and identities. She demonstrates that key political components form those debates, together with international capitalism and exploitative classification kin inside a turning out to be foreign approach; the impression of machine, commercial, and scientific applied sciences on women's lives and reproductive rights; and post-human embodiment as expressed via biotechnologies, the body/machine interface, and the commodification of wish. Melzer's research makes it transparent that feminist writings and readings of technology fiction are a part of a feminist critique of present energy family members - and that the alien structures (cyborgs, clones, androids, extraterrestrial beings, and hybrids) that populate post-modern technology fiction are as probably empowering as they're threatening.

These three areas of feminist thought—identity and difference; feminist critiques of science and technology; and the relationship between gender identity, body, and desire—cannot be separated, and all recur in the three sets of readings of science fiction texts in this book.

Science fiction also fleshes out ideas of boundary dissolutions and border identities in terms of nationality, race, and ethnicity, as well as gender and sexuality. The texts analyzed in Alien Constructions are in dialogue with feminist theories about subjectivities of women of color that view identity as a continuous negotiation of conflicting experiences more than as a final product. This view embraces differences as persistent components of subjectivity and integrates them into the model of the inappropriate other (Trinh Min-ha) and into the concept of impurity as resisting subjectivity (Maria Lugones).
